With the boom in the number of hospitals nurses are always in demand, many hospitals face recruitment troubles due to the lack of efficient nurses in their location. This distinct requirement gave birth to the necessity for nurses who are ready to travel to fill such vacancies on a temporary contractual basis, which led to the evolution of the travel nurse.
How they function
A travel nurse agency is an organization set up to cater to the increasing demand for nurses in hospitals throughout the country. The agency has a long standing agreement with the hospital to provide them with highly efficient and well trained nurses. The hospital pays the agency and not the nurses since the operation is between them.
The agency in turn employs many a travel nurse to fill such vacancies. The nurses are on the payroll of the agency, and it is the agency that is responsible for their accommodation and travel expenses while traveling. A travel nurse fills out all the paperwork at the agencies office, and upon validation of the credentials submitted, is welcomed on board.
Assignments
The travel nurse agency scans their database for a suitable location for each nurse and once the proposal is given to the nurse to approve, once the application is authorized, it is sent across to the hospital. An assignment can last for anything from eight to twenty-six weeks, and can be extended, provided both the hospital and the nurse concur.
